Statue salvaged as church site torn for Burger King

In Elyria, St John Lutheran Church members rescued a 5 foot statue of Jesus Christ from their West Broad Street church before it is torn down next month to expand a neighboring Burger King. Rick Strickler carried the statue as family recalled its long history with the congregation. The figure likely will be stored in the church's circular entrance area at St John.

Last Service at Broad Street Lutheran Church

St John Lutheran Church holds one final service at the Original Church of God building at Broad Street and West Avenue at 4 pm led by Rev Dennis Schmidt as a time of remembrance. Members note German immigrant roots, church built in 1889, moved to West River Road in 1980, building sold to Original Church of God five years earlier, and plans by Midwest R Corp to demolish the site and adjacent Burger King for a larger Burger King.

New pill cuts breast cancer risk by half in study

In a historic finding from the STAR trial, tamoxifen reduced breast cancer rates by about 49 percent among healthy women. Researchers from the National Cancer Institute and more than 13 000 participants led by Dr Victor Vogel noted the significant risk reduction and hailed the result as a milestone in cancer prevention.

Supreme Court upholds brass theft conviction

The Ohio Supreme Court upheld the theft in office conviction of Lorain city worker Angel Lozano for stealing brass water meters. Lozano and a former employee sold about a ton of meters as scrap brass for 346 dollars. The court ruled the statute covers all public employees regardless of position or oath.

Avon planners weigh Route 83 traffic study findings

Avon Planning Commission will review a CRS Corp study warning that Route 83 Interstate 480 interchange and nearby intersections will face severe backups and gridlock by 2003 despite nearby shopping center upgrades.
