Rudyard Kipling, famed writer and Nobel laureate, died in London at 70 after a perforated ulcer. His body moved to a hospital chapel for cremation per his wishes as condolences poured in from across the Empire. His widow Caro and daughter Elsie Bambridge were at his side.
Ray Potts former Summit County sheriff faces a two year term for conspiracy to violate the internal revenue law after a nine member jury convicted him and five others. Potts draws a 32500 fine while co defendants J J Graham Pat Moran and William Hatcher receive 18 month terms and fines. Joseph Davis and Tony Straga are also convicted with varying sentences. The jury reached verdict after two and a half hours and Judge Samuel H West called the case the most outrageous official corruption he had seen.
Light snow and much colder tonight with a cold wave in the extreme southwest portion. Sunday will be generally fair but colder, with the temperature dropping across the region.
Old age pension checks for Lorain County's 1031 pensioners totaling 15150 monthly will be mailed today after a suspension due to depleted funds. The announcement came from the state division of aid for the aged via County Pension Administrator William France.
The Senate opened a tense Saturday session to pass the $2.37 billion Baby Bond bonus bill before night. Senator Elmer Thomas urged cash bonuses over bonds, arguing currency expansion within Gold and silver limits. A near 69 to vote 69 for, 13 against, nine undecided.
Cleveland pastor Dr C L Hubbard of First M E Church will speak at Elyria Rotary Club noon Tuesday at the Elks Restaurant. His topic is An Ancient Remedy for a Modern Ailment. Dr B J Bond will chair the program.
County commissioners approved another 1000 dollar advance to Amherst township from the county relief bond issue. About 44000 of the 144000 relief bond unpledged remains. Amherst already received a 1000 dollar advance on December 17.
The police pension fund at year start stands at 29,281.51 dollars per a report by Police Chief E. J. Stankard secretary of the pension board. Investments include 12,000 in Elyria bonds and 4,000 in assessment bonds, with the rest in cash. Receipts for 19365 total 9,066 and pensions paid out 3,302. Three former patrolmen and two widows are now drawing pensions.
King George V lay gravely ill of bronchial catarrh at Sandringham House with signs of heart weakness causing anxiety. Doctors from London joined three eminent physicians as oxygen was administered. The royal family including Queen Mary and the princes remained at the residence as specialists prepared further consultations.
Cleveland mayor Harold H. Burton addressed about 120 Elyria American Legion drum corps members at the Legion Home on Ohio Street, stressing responsibilities and opportunities for veterans in modern life. He urged prompt, lawful action in government and praised the corps, calling for representation of the entire veteran population at the national Legion convention in Cleveland next September.
A Midwest snowstorm moved toward the East, grounding planes and closing highways. Iowa and Wisconsin reports heavy snow with impassable county roads. Newark Ohio saw eight inches, Chicago faced snow and grounded air service, while forecasters warned of zero temperatures Sunday morning.

Three candidates vie for each of the second and third vice president posts, with Deane Burns, Ross Aungst, Stanley Martin and Hl Schultz, Lester Johnson, James Wise named respectively. W. O. McClellan seeks reappointment as secretary and treasurer.
At the Women's National Republican Club 15th anniversary luncheon in New York City, John D. M. Hamilton urged Republicans to criticize New Deal policies and methods without fear. He argued the party must win votes and oppose a governance of men over the law, while Robert Alfonso Taft prepared to broadcast his "Something for Nothing" address.
Four people died when a cyclone struck Fyffe Alabama today. Victims include Claude Portwood and his wife, farmer Robert Rowell and his daughter. A cloudburst hindered access while ambulances ferried twelve injured to temporary hospitals. The storm damaged about four homes and many more structures along a three mile path.
Gov. Harold G. Hoffman rushes to reopen the Lindbergh case seeking fresh evidence and possible co conspirators amidst death threats and impeachment talk. Washington January 18 The two year senate investigation into American munitions makers and financiers during war time appears to have ended in a bitter row involving former President Woodrow Wilson. Chairman Nye disclosed only 400 of a 125000 appropriation remains and Senator Glass拒 declared he would not vote another dollar to the munitions committee. The inquiry into J P Morgan Co and allies prior to U S entry into the war was recessed amid doubts it would resume. Nye said hearings might continue about 15 days next Thursday with Morean partners expected to appear and an additional 7000 to 9000 asked. Nye also said the committee spent 23000 of New York state and city funds and 58000 for relief workers to aid records, provoking criticism from Majority Leader Robinson that funds were misused. Glass defended Wilson and Lansing against Nye for alleged falsifications about secret treaties until the Paris Peace Conference, provoking a dramatic oral lash by Glass on the crowded senate gallery.
Elyria Chamber of Commerce holds a Wednesday 8 p.m. forum in the Chamber rooms. Walter Davies leads Social Security program discussions while L. D. Huffman covers Elyria industrial development and Earl Bell explains Ohio sales tax law changes. Open to non members and those interested.
Secretary Henry A. Wallace said the substitute AAA legislation must pass by February 15 to provide comprehensive farmer aid this year. Congress and key agriculture committee chairs plan to rush the measure to the floor so it can take effect before crop planting time.
The Colson Corporation plans an assembly line for bicycles to meet rising demand. The move aims to increase output 15 to 20 percent at lower unit costs, improve delivery precision, and raise wages while delivering a better product.
