Dr Martin Luther King Jr then a Crozer seminary student was refused beer purchase at Mary’s Cafe in Maple Shade New Jersey. The bartender Ernest Nichols 80 fired in the air and faced a disorderly conduct charge. civil rights charges were later dropped. Nichols widow Margaret recalls interest faded until 1968 when King cited the incident. Judge W Thomas McGann notes Nichols defended in 1950, Nichols later ran Ernie’s Tavern in Riverside New Jersey.
