Taft grants clemency in baby death case
Ohio Governor Bob Taft commuted Rebecca Hopfer's murder and gross abuse of a corpse conviction from 15 years to life to 11 years, making her parole eligible. Hopfer, 27, served nearly eight years after concealing a pregnancy and delivering a baby in Washington Township, later found in a Montgomery County incinerator. The Parole Board and lawmakers had supported clemency citing juvenile status, rehabilitation, and lack of intent for a purposeful killing.
