Ninety six Elyria High School seniors prepared for graduation next Thursday night as the Senior Chapel honored by underclassmen in the auditorium. Robert Blair accepted a gift check for the electric clock fund from Principal Shively, while Edward Morris led the program and delivered the farewell. Joe Kaminsky received the class rush trophy from Joe Brove and the seniors sang the class song after a flute solo by Edward Bembower.
Occasional rain tonight and Tuesday with a shift to light snow in the north and west. Central and southern areas warmer tonight but much colder Tuesday as wintry mix ends.
Washington January 16. The American Legion denounces a National Economy League recommendation that veterans must prove service connection beyond doubt before disability compensation for disease is allowed. Captain Watson B. Miller, chair of the league's rehabilitation committee, told the joint congressional veterans committee such provisions would cause many hardships for veterans.
The Supreme Court refused to authorize Special Master Edward F. McClennen to take testimony on water diversion from the Great Lakes for the Gulf Waterway opening this spring and denied a motion to amend its original decree in the Great Lakes cases.
The Senate Agriculture Committee postponed action on the domestic allotment relief plan until Senator Smith of South Carolina can confer with President-Elect Roosevelt about the measure.
Washington hearing shows Judiciary committee postpones final action on the 3.05 percent beer-wine bill as a substitute for a beer-only measure. Chairman Norris forecasts a favorable report next Monday after delay.
The filibustering bloc led by Senator Long of Louisiana holds the floor at the Senate opening. Long resists attempts to allow other members to speak as obstructionist tactics continue.
In Washington on January 16 Senate Democratic Leader Robinson sought unanimous consent to vote on President Hoover's veto of the Philippine Independence Bill tomorrow, but Senator Long of Louisiana objected and defeated the effort.
Chief Justice Hughes announced the Supreme Court will recess next Monday and resume on February 6. The two intervening weeks will be spent in writing opinions.
Senator Tydings announced in the Senate that a two thirds majority was ready to override the President's veto of the Philippine Independence Bill, signaling strong cross party support for the measure.

Leimbach as vice president, R. E. Campbell as secretary, and F. Hales as treasurer. Dues were reduced to six dollars a year, and a keynote talk by W. O. Everson of the Farm Bureau Oil Company urged farmers to operate their own business and unite resources for cooperative marketing.
County employees face a payless payday as bills and payments stall while the board works to finalize the appropriation measure. Auditor C. B. Kelser and Commissioner C. D. Murray say expect delays into the week’s end until the appropriation bill is adopted.
The Elyria Chamber of Commerce is reviewing several bills introduced or to be introduced in the Ohio legislature. The executive committee will refer copies to relevant committees for study and report their conclusions to guide the Chamber's stance on the bills.

George R. Kelley longtime Elyria compositor for the Chronicle Telegram and predecessors died yesterday at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a monthlong illness. He leaves a daughter Mrs. R. H. Nederer and two grandchildren. Born October 19 1856 in Elyria he spent his life here and was a Methodist Episcopal church member. Remains at Bittner Funeral Home with services Wednesday at 3 00 P M from the same house and burial in Ridgelawn cemetery conducted by Rev. W W C Endley.
Elyria announces full shift to annual promotion in all grade schools ending mid year divisions. Three teachers exit, 115 eighth graders move to high school, boosting high school enrollment while grade enrollments fall. Savings projected at 15000 yearly with no mid year transfers.
Judge W B Thompson paused entering foreclosure against John and Regina Schoan of Huntington in a Federal Land Bank of Kentucky case. Attorney G B Findley argued the family, with three schoolchildren, cannot pay taxes. the court granted a one week suspension to seek adjustments and possible relief amid national conditions.
The fifth District Conference of the American Legion convened in Elyria on July 16 1933 with representatives from 56 posts across eleven counties. Lorain County delegates aided by Elyria Avon Lake Wellington and others played active roles under State Vice Commander I E Kubie. A county wide campaign plan was approved for nine Lorain posts and an American Legion Early Bird party will be held each January for dues paid before year start.
Elyria firefighter E. J. Arias was slightly burned on the forearm as a grass and brush fire spread from a Hast River Street burn to land south of Columbia Avenue. Eyelashes and eyebrows were singed. flames were beat down with brooms after two alarms. The blaze began in a vacant East River Street lot at 2 28 PM and a second alarm followed at 2 42 PM.
A meeting for all men who have attended Citizens' Military Training Camps or who plan to attend will be held at the Ohio National Guard Armory at 8 p m tonight.
Lorain County prosecutors kept secret whether an indictment was returned in the Eva Volpe mystery as grand jurors reviewed witnesses and evidence. Volpe, 21, was found dead near Avon Lake after leaving home the night before, with investigators weighing murder versus suicide.
The Lorain grand jury indicted Samuel Latovich for the murder of his landlady Mrs Angela Kuma after a Christmas quarrel. Latovich is hospitalized for wounds from Andrew Kuma. Nicholas Schummer faces manslaughter for the shooting of his nine year old daughter during a drunken stupor on January 7. The panel also returned open indictments against Paul Yukas Ralph Yukas Louis Koss Joseph Lautner for auto theft and burglary.
