Ice Coated Channels Stall Ships Across Region
Heavy freezing rain and snow cripple river navigation from the Appalachians to the Mid Atlantic as ice clogs channels. The Mississippi towboat Mariner broke up near Cape Girardeau amid ice floes and buoy losses, leaving only the Ohio River channel navigable with towboats. Tow and barge traffic runs at 23 percent of normal.
