Weather bulletin warns heavy lake effect snow near Erie

A weather notice warns 24 inches of snow with locally heavier amounts near Lake Erie. Strong winds, colder air, highs in the 30s and lows in the teens. Hanoi planes strike Lao town as war fears rise

In northeast Laos four North Vietnamese Antonov fighter bombers attacked Muong Yut, the first airstrike on ground positions cited by the Royal Lao Government. Two planes were shot down, amid reports of other incursions and a major Pathet Lao attack near Luang Prabang and Nam Bac, signaling escalation in Southeast Asia.

Snow and ice cripple the east as storms batter region

Snow sleet and freezing rain blanketed the east from the Great Lakes to New England. Schools closed from Illinois to Georgia. Tens of thousands lost power across five states as 46 weather related deaths were tallied.

Sicily quakes kill 220 in worst disaster since 1908

A series of killer earthquakes struck western Sicily killing over 220, with Montevago hospital collapse burying about 200. Damage spread to Palermo Trapani and Marsala as relief crews airlifted medicine blankets and tents amid freezing cold and snow.

Army calls deserters rotten few with poor records

In Heidelberg, UPI reports the U S Army in Europe labels deserters as a rott en minority who desert for reasons other than Vietnam duty. Spokesmen say about a dozen seek asylum in Sweden and France, while 19,000 European soldiers volunteered for Vietnam in 1967. They argue the protesters do not reflect overall attitudes and note Army policy bars those with discipline records from Vietnam duty.

Storms Hit Europe Across Several Nations

Storms driven by hurricane force winds ripped through Britain causing widespread damage. Glasgow and Greenock reported fatalities and many injuries as gales battered Scotland England and Northern Ireland while heavy snow and avalanches trapped people in the Swiss Alps and gusts reached 110 mph in the Hebrides.
