Zhao touts Taiwan reunification plan in San Francisco
Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang addressed a 300 strong Chinese American audience at the Fairmont Hotel praising a reunification plan that would grant Taiwan autonomy within the PRC. He said Taiwan would have its own armed forces and political system and would become a special administrative region, not swallowed by the mainland. Zhao urged Chinese leaders in Los Angeles and Seattle to push the plan while noting no mainland presence on Taiwan after reunification.
