Groups threaten suit over wind turbine near Lake Erie
Birding groups led by American Bird Conservancy and Black Swamp Bird Observatory say the Ohio National Guard wind turbine at Camp Perry near Port Clinton may violate the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. They note 60 bald eagle nests within 10 miles, while guards say the 198 foot tower poses no significant impact. The project costs 1.5 million dollars and could be completed by late February. Camp Perry will study effects with Bowling Green State University and University of Toledo, with Fish and Wildlife Service proposing lights off during peak migration periods. The service also questions bald eagle mortality risk.
