A large snowy owl with a 4 ft wingspan and 24 inch height ranges from pure white to lightly barred. Females are larger and more heavily marked. some birds are hard to sex. Typically silent with a hoarse croak and a shrill whistle on breeding grounds. Habitat includes tundra dunes marshes fields and airports in winter. Breeds in northern Alaska and northern Canada. winters across Canada into the northern US and irregularly farther. also found in Eurasia.
