Dogs sniff out cancer detection study gains attention
An international team led by the Pine Street Foundation and the Polish Academy of Sciences tested five dogs on breath samples from lung and breast cancer patients and healthy individuals. The dogs identified 49 percent of lung cancer samples and 88 percent of breast cancer samples, suggesting dogs may match conventional imaging in detecting early cancer. The work, to be published in Integrative Cancer Therapies, notes dogs may sense chemical cues but cautions further research on how dogs process scent and distinguish smells.
