Washington AP The makers of Vali um and Librium challenge FDA guidance to curb use after four months while AMA Journal editor backs the label requiring reassessment after prolonged use. FDA rules demand the label state long term effectiveness has not been assessed and physicians should periodically reevaluate each patient.
The FDA will require manufacturers to add physician guidance in the Federal Register about reassessing long term use of anti anxiety drugs like Valium and Librium. It notes dependence risks and questions long term effectiveness if the underlying cause of anxiety remains. A company spokesman defends Valium as safe and effective for anxiety muscle spasms and some epilepsy cases.
Dr. Hanna Holborm Gray, 47, acting president of Yale University, was named to be the next president of the University of Chicago. She will formally succeed John T. Wilson on July 1 and become the first woman to head a top private university in the nation.
Pierre Faideau of Paris testified in a Nevada court that the three page Mormon Will found at Mormon Church headquarters in Salt Lake City is authentic Hughes handwriting. He said after detailed examination he was convinced Hughes wrote the document, despite initial forgery concerns.
