A late night fire destroyed Harmar House Nursing Home in Marietta Ohio killing 21 elderly patients and injuring 23 others. The one story cross shaped facility housed 46 residents with no sprinkler system and investigators blamed the blaze on an unknown cause amid freezing conditions.
Marietta resident Charles Sellers frantically helped pull four to five elderly women from Harmar House Nursing Home before returning to guide others to safety. Twenty one residents died and six were hospitalized as a blaze with unclear cause spread through the facility. Sellers, soot covered, described the detu r force of the tragedy and the shortage of ambulances that night.
Tom Shiflet aboard an Alsport Tracker shattered his own endurance mark by traveling 480 miles in 22 hours 35 minutes on a half mile Norwalk track amid bitter cold and wind chill. Officials from Alsport and Flash 401 oil witnessed the feat for snowmobile record certification.
Lorain County enjoys a brief thaw with teens temperatures and a warmer forecast for tomorrow. In Vermilion three residents were hospitalized with exposure after heating failed during the subzero spell. Richard Snyder, 50, and his sisters Mary 81 and Ann 4, were listed in fair condition at Lorain St. Joseph Hospital. Police were alerted by a neighbor as Snyder called for help. A heat outage persists with limited details on duration.

In Clarksville Pennsylvania a funeral at Church of the Immaculate Conception drew coal miners and family for Jock Yablonski and his wife Margaret and daughter Charlotte buried at Washington Cemetery. The slain UMW official, his wife, and daughter were killed in late December. The service featured labor priest Charles Owen Rice calling the act a deed of infamy. Yablonski, a dissident UMW official, had challenged President Bosle and pursued reform in the union’s leadership.
US infantrymen clash with North Vietnamese and Viet Cong on Black Virgin Mountain for a second day. The 25th Infantry Division reports 47 Communist deaths in an eight hour battle. Overnight shelling hits bases. Americans suffer several casualties.
An informant tipped peace officers to a motel where a kidnapped girl was held for a $40 000 ransom. She was freed unharmed last night as three men were jailed and two others sought. The girl, identified as Karen Vickers, was recovered after hours of captivity.
A three year effort to move church from sanctuary to community culminates next spring with an 84 million housing development in Elyria. Elviras Jones Chapel AME leads the project, described as a model for the area. Reporter Charles Montague details the ambitious undertaking.
