Lorain housing agency refuses $511000 grant

A federal HUD award of 511000 to Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority was canceled by the authority which does not want the funds. The group canceled nine months after requesting the money to buy 32 privately owned homes for lease to low income families.

Avon Lake officials awarded large pay raises

Avon Lake school administrators and board clerk treasurer received substantial increases on December 9 but the raises were not published in the salary schedule. Superintendent Robert Robinson and other principals, plus Edward Mitroff, also got raises, with Robinson's pay rising from 20,195 to 23,500 annually.

Boy survives sub zero bridge ordeal in Elyria rescue

A 14 year old deaf mute, Mark Miles, spent about an hour on the understructure of a Penn Central bridge over the Black River in Elyria in 4 below weather. A passing girl called for help and firemen using a rope lowered to haul him up. He was warmed at a store and returned home in a police car, uninjured.

Lorain County balks at state list for Rt 57 extension

Lorain County officials condemned the State Highway Department’s bond funded plan as they learned Elyria’s proposed Lorain Boulevard extension from Lodi Street to West Avenue was not approved. County commissioners will review with regional planning director Richard W McGinnis and bring the issue to the transportation committee, as the $35 million project was dropped from the top priorities despite county needs for a new administration and courthouse area. County officials say the county has about $59 million to allocate for urban bottleneck projects, while state projects include Lake Avenue widening and a Mills Road bridge improvement.
