State Board Targets Slot Machines Amid Private Club Violations

The State Liquor Board intensified its campaign against private clubs and liquor permit holders tied to slot machines and gambling bans. Nine defendants are ordered to appear next week as the board suspends licenses of about a dozen clubs for continued violations across Sandusky, Bellevue, Norwalk, Fremont, Willard, Port Clinton, Dover, New Philadelphia, Canton, Dennison, New Waterford, Galion, Bucyrus, Lima, Upper Sandusky, and Mt. Vernon with dates set January 13 through 16.

Great Grain Elevator Destroyed By Fire

Fire at the Great Northern Railroad terminal in Superior Wisconsin destroyed the giant elevator after an explosion of grain fumes. Loss estimated at $2,000,000 with 5 employees and 2 firemen treated for third degree burns. About 1,000,000 bushels of wheat flax and corn stored there were destroyed.

Plan expands college program to train officers for war effort

The plan provides for immediate February 2 1942 entry for mid year and June graduates, plus year round college courses. New offerings include navigation pre medical lab tech two physical education courses and remodels in meteorology cartography military acoustics and electrical communications. The aim is to graduate men before military call and prepare them for postwar reconstruction.

Widow And Children Die In Fire At Greenfield Edge

A Greenfield widow of six months and three of her seven children died when a two story frame home at the southwest edge of Greenfield burned last night. The fatalities included Mrs Charles Benson and three of her children, while another child Frances escaped but was severely burned and hospitalized. A family member was reported responsible for starting the blaze.

Funeral Services For Judge Duffy Monday Morning

Funeral services for Judge William Duffy of Lorain will be held Monday morning at St. Anthony's Church with Rev Ambrose Finegan as celebrant. The judge died Wednesday night after a long illness. He was a Carroll County native, Ohio Northern University graduate, admitted to the bar in 1918, and served on the Lorain Municipal Court for 12 years. Suffocation Listed as Baby's Cause of Death

A three month old South Amherst infant, Jerry Ballard Herbert, son of Mr and Mrs Max Herbert, died from suffocation possibly due to bed clothes. Elyria firemen transported an inhalator and South Amherst volunteers applied artificial respiration but efforts failed. The infant was reportedly dead for an hour before rescue crews arrived, with Deputy Sheriff AL Kigseli assisting.
