Maine Potato Farmers Unhappy Over Controls
Maine potato farmers and shippers condemn Office of Price Stabilization price ceilings as unnecessary and foolish, warning tighter controls may shorten future supplies by removing incentives to hold crops. The Jan 19 order sets Maine shipping point prices at 3.50 per hundredweight with grade adjustments, about 10 to 15 cents below current prices. Housewives welcome the lower staple price, while industry leaders cite two lean years and reduced parity as reasons ceilings trim excess profits.
