17 Year Old Youth Saved From Gallows Commutes Death Sentence
Joseph Maish, 17, was saved from execution for the knife killing of a classmate when Governor Walgren commuted his death sentence to 99 years in prison. Guards dressed him for midnight execution as officials prepared, then the commutation halted the process, and Maish collapsed with relief as he was returned to his cell.
