The First Cleveland Corporation proposes to purchase all common stock of Savings Deposit Bank and Trust Co in Elysia. The bank’s board of directors recommends shareholders accept an offer of 300 dollars per share.
A. A. West announces candidacy for mayor of Elgin pending May primary. The First Cleveland Corp offers to buy 2,300 shares of Savings Deposit and Trust Co. stock at 3200 per share, raising questions about keeping community services. Rockwood, bank president, would keep services and directors may add First Cleveland reps. West cites support from local Republicans and pledge cards.
County Auditor Ayres informs the Board of Commissioners that 62,061 dollars remains under the budget requests for general fund appropriation for 1955. The amount requires adjustments by departments before salaries can be paid, supporting the county’s position that this is not a year for salary increases. The report notes a separate overage of 69,877 dollars versus last year’s certification.
A county raid led to the seizure of about 180 gallons of mash and seven gallons of moonshine. James Young, 42, and three others were jailed pending federal investigation into the operation. He cites sightings from military and civilian sources, noting Russia's large undersea fleet may total 350 to 375 subs, far exceeding U S numbers.
