Ohio passes Safe Haven law for unwanted infants
Gov. Taft signed a measure allowing parents to drop off newborns no older than 72 hours at hospitals or safe havens without arrest. The law, to take effect in three months, lets juvenile courts treat the child as neglected and place it in state care, with DNA tests required if the parent later seeks custody. Bail bondsmen must register and be licensed within 90 days, limiting who may apprehend or detain a person.
