Campaign promise may cost him job
John Nolan Jr of Burrillville Rhode Island quit taking five hundred twelve dollars per month in salary after promising to take only one thousand dollars a year. He argues the welfare director post is part time and unpaid taxes would negate Social Security benefits. The town treasurer says he should accept the checks under local government tradition. Nolan notes the job required little time and many tasks were already done by state workers.

Microbe Based Fuel From Carbon Dioxide and Sunlight
University of Toronto engineer Morris Wayman reports at AAAS meeting a two step microbial process can convert carbon dioxide and sunlight into liquid fuels. Initial results suggest microbial oil production may outrun grain based alcohols for automotive fuel. The process uses photosynthetic microbes to fix CO2 into sugars and a second microbial system to turn sugars into fuel or refinery feedstock.
