Embarrassing East Asia Position Tests Britain's Policy
The article discusses Britain's awkward stance in East Asia amid pressure from the United States and NATO allies. It notes Britain's recognition of the Chinese Communist government, its past conflicts with Chinese Reds, and the tension over Formosa, SEATO, and possible shifts before the Bangkok conference on Feb 23. It mentions U.S. Secretary of State Dulles and Foreign Secretary Eden negotiating, with warnings from British delegates at the UN and a TV interview stirring debate in London. The piece also covers a separate report on solar energy prospects by MIT's Dr. George R. Harrison, predicting solar heat and electricity potential but noting current inefficiencies and a timeline of 5–10 years for cost-competitive solar use.
