Elyria women named to Cavalettes selections

John Praeter of 3WE confirmed the appointment of two Elyria women and the selection of Connie Clark of Lorain and Marianne Broz of Rocky River as Cavalettes. Praeter noted the final choice came close, with a four-member committee plus moderators. Twelve Cavalettes will appear at each game except opening, national TV, and playoff games.

Record Fire Year in Elyria Tops 1975 and 1976 Losses

Elyria reports a 1977 fire year total of about 924000, the highest on record. Major blazes included a Rt 2 gasoline tank truck explosion killing the driver, a Holiday Inn fire, a Conrail diesel engine fire, and a Franklin School blaze. Fire crews answered 1363 calls, 314 more than 1976, with details to follow in the annual report.

Outstanding Hand icapped High School Senior award to Brad Bartlome

Brad Bartlome 18 of South Amherst will receive the Lorain County Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities Outstanding Handicapped High School Senior award. Despite muscular dystrophy confining him to a wheelchair since age nine, he has kept a B average for two years, joined the drama club, and helped produce a play. His late older brother Terry, also an MD victim, died at 18 after high school graduation. The award promotes awareness of daily burdens faced by handicapped people and aims to influence future decision makers. Brad will receive a plaque from the coalition.

UFO Sighting Reported Near Perry Monument

A Coast Guardsman at Marblehead Coast Guard Station reported an unidentified flying object with red and white flashing lights hovering near Perry's Monument on South Bass Island around 1 a.m. yesterday. The object reportedly hovered for several minutes, then moved away. FAA and Oberlin air traffic control have no records of aircraft in the area at that time.
