Farm Reserve Debate Grows As 1971 Issue
Washington reports proposals to form a formal strategic reserve of core farm commodities loom as a major agricultural issue for 1971. Robert Liebenow of the Corn Refiners Association cites corn blight fears and price swings, while NFU proposals seek 22.5 million tons in and out of government storage with high resale safeguards. Government officials remain uncertain, noting current laws already build and release price-supported stock as needed.
