The 91st Congress adjourned after a lame duck session meeting constitutional deadlines. Leaders Albert Rhodes Mansfield and Scott called Nixon to report a compromise on supersonic flight delaying a vote until next session. The SST fight ended with a $2.6 billion Transportation bill, while Nixon plans a State of the Union for Jan 22.
Norwalk police held Mervin Hinkle and Larry Harrington after they tried to pass counterfeit $20 bills at Harold’s Bar. A patrol stop on Route 20 led to searches uncovering more fake notes, suggesting a link to multiple counterfeit bills circulated locally.
A forecast shows cloudy conditions with rain likely in the south and a chance of rain or snow in the north by afternoon or evening, turning to rain at night. Temperatures reach the upper 30s to 40s, with tonight's lows in the mid-30s to low 40s. Cloudy tomorrow with a chance of showers.
The Associated Press reports that a hand grenade struck a car in the Gaza Strip killing 10 year old Mark Aroyo and 8 year old Abigail Aroyo while their mother was wounded. Their father Robert Aroyo was slightly hurt and drove to Gaza City before collapsing from shock. Israel blamed Arab militants as attacks followed earlier mortar and rocket fire on settlements in the region.
In Glasgow hundreds of fans surged for exits after a barrier failed on stairway steps at Ibrox Park. At least 66 killed and many injured as crowd pressure caused suffocation and trampling in Britain's worst soccer disaster. Authorities report 108 hospitalized with several in critical condition.
Governor-elect John J. Gilligan argues virtually every Ohio school district faces bankruptcy and requires massive state funding to stay open. He criticizes Rhodes era education funding and calls for an income tax path, warns against boondoggle projects, and urges better use of federal money while aiming for an end to the Vietnam War.
