Efforts to ease tensions between Russia and Iran
The United States seeks to reduce friction between Russia and Iran ahead of the January 16 United Nations assembly. The State Department pushes for a Tripartite Iran commission proposed at Moscow talks, supported by Secretary of State Symes and British Secretary Bevin but rejected by Russia. Washington cautions Iran against rushing its case and hopes the issue won t force a U N role at its first meeting.

School hires two new teachers as roster grows
The board approved loaves of absence for Lieut Gleason with salary to be paid as if he had continued teaching, and named two new elementary teachers Miss Caroline Wagner and Miss Mary Heizer each earning 1604.50 yearly. Wagner, a SPARS veteran, will teach first and second grades at Franklin, replacing Miss Doris Ryerson who left to marry. Heizer becomes an extra third grade teacher at Gates, replacing Ruth Carlson. Betty Eddy married during holidays becomes Mrs Theobald and continues teaching. Janice Alexander ends WAVES service and plans civilian return around February 1, resuming first grade duties at Franklin. Carleton resigns November 10 to marry.

Elyria District Honored With Merit Award For Safety
The Elyria District of The Ohio Fuel Gas Company received an American Gas Association merit award for outstanding achievement in accident prevention. The certificate covered 119 employees from April 2, 1999, to August 1943, totaling 2,017,579 consecutive man hours without a disabling accident. District manager C. PF. Bronson credited compliance with National Safety Council rules and each employee’s contribution. James W. Fitzgerald reenlisted in the Army, with a 30 day furlough before reporting to a North Carolina camp in January.

Santa Ana California violinist Tascha Weifett testified that his wife made scathing remarks about his fiddling in front of friends and the couple obtained an interlocutory divorce from silent screen star Florence Vidor.
