A Pacific storm with hurricane strength roared across the Rockies toward the Great Plains bringing a cold wave and blizzard conditions. Another storm off the northwest coast threatened British Columbia and parts of the U S with 80 mph winds. In the Midwest glaze covered a wide belt from Oklahoma to Michigan as temperatures could drop up to 20 degrees below zero. Blizzard conditions were forecast in the Plains while rain fell east of the glaze belt in the Midwest. A tanker crewman drowned off Oregon and a tug lost a barge near the Columbia River mouth. In Michigan a plane with six people made a forced landing in a potato field after a snow squall. Forecasters warned of more rain then snow in the Midwest by Thursday.
