A US search effort in the Andes near La Paz sought the Eastern Airlines Boeing 727 with 33 aboard including seven Americans. Heavy clouds hampered scans as officials noted no wreckage despite two hours of patrols and renewed inquiries planned for the afternoon.
Elyria Lorain County Sheriff James Mertz seeks court intervention over the November general election loss to Martin Mahony by 213 votes amid recounts and an over vote at Elyria Township. The suit cites 12 irregularities including miscounted votes and faulty machines as Mahony begins his term. Mahony's lawyers say corrections were made and removal would not alter the result.
A visiting judge from Lorain County will hear Jerry Lehman's bid for a new Fairfield County sheriff election over alleged voting irregularities and unfair campaign tactics. Lehman, who trailed by 775 votes to Jim R. Peck, cites mishandled absentee ballots and one invalidation affecting outcomes.
The New Year opened with a heat surge as noon readings hit a record 67 degrees, eclipsing the 59 degree mark set in 1979. December was warmer and wetter than normal, with an average 36.97 degrees and 2.54 inches of precipitation plus three quarters inch more than average. Snow was lighter than typical with 6.2 inches in December.
Lorain couple Willie and Lula Capers welcomed their seventh child, a girl named Sharita born at St. Joseph Hospital at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, the county’s first baby of the year. An Oberlin outage darkened 350 customers for 11 minutes after a 7,200 volt incident. The New Orleans Building in Elyria saw its first major 1985 fire, triggered by smoke detectors. In Norwalk, Bryan Love and Kathy Thurston were shot. William McCullough faces two counts of attempted murder. Mrs. Susan Bates of Bay Village delivered one of 1984’s last babies at 11:14 p.m. at St. John & West Shore Hospital.
