Lorain swears in new mayor after Zahorec death

Lorain, Ohio, swears in Alex Olejko, 62, as mayor after the death of Mayor Joseph Zahorec in a head-on crash on Middle Ridge Road near Route 2. Zahorec, 64, was en route to the Cleveland Clinic for prostate cancer treatment. his wife Helen, 62, and truck driver William Yancar, 39, were hospitalized in serious condition. Olejko, a 16-year council veteran and City Council president, will serve until a November special election.

Crash probe continues after Lorain collision

Lorain raceway area crash left Zahorec critically injured with broken wrist and ribs and head cut while driver William Yancer remained in serious condition in the ICU at St Josephs. Authorities say Yancer lost control on ice after leaving a highway overpass. his truck crossed into the southbound lane and struck Zahorec. Zahorec, en route for Cleveland treatment, is the third top Lorain official to die within four months following Majorana and Murello.
