Navy directive bans race discrimination aboard ships and stations
Secretary Forrestal issued a directive to all ships and activities within the Navy to adhere tightly to regulations and prohibit any differential treatment because of race or color. The order follows a report that negro troops were aboard a transporter at Le Havre, France, without suitable accommodations, and aims to prevent further misunderstandings. Navy weather officials warn Atlantic conditions will worsen into January and February, while Pacific weather remains challenging but less restrictive for now.
