Peter, an 8,500 resident community member, is the victim of a fatal winter discovery. Mail carrier Leo J. Lussier, 53, recalls finding the boy under a snow mound after spotting a mitten and boot hidden beneath the white blanket. The town mourns as authorities investigate.
Michele Setzer, aged 4, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Setzer of 1522 Park Ave, rides a bike with training wheels near home as snow arrives. The picture by C&T photographer Dave Zatoposky captures a girl stuck on a slick surface while peddling furiously.
In Washington UPI reports backers of the Panama Canal treaties show they can block changes but struggle to win ratification. The Senate defeated the Allen amendment 55 to 34, failing to retain troops guarding the waterway after turnover. Debate to continue as the canal vote nears a conclusion.
Akron adopts an abortion regulation by 7 6 vote as antiabortionists cheer. The council rejected an 8 5 bid to bar city funds from defending the ordinance. The measure takes effect May 1 if signed by the mayor, with opponents planning court action.
Prosecutor Grunda moves to bar any reference to hypnosis in Papp’s trial for rape and murder of Roxie Ann Keathley. A visiting Summit County judge will hear arguments at noon, with defense seeking more hypnotic sessions and access to a video of the age regression.
DOT official cites rising risk of rail accidents involving hazardous materials after Tennessee and Florida derailments. In 1976 derailments caused 15 deaths and $184 million in damages. nationwide 7,858 derailments reported in 1977, with about 5 percent of rail cargoes hazardous.
