A Kenyon fire during the Elyria Elks lodge Golden Anniversary observance claimed nine lives. About 2,000 people attended the two day event including 300 out of town guests and many wives of members. The photo shows local and grand officers at the Saturday dinner with Frank Stetson, Joseph B. Kyle, Earl Sloan, Cy Kremser, and Gérald Nau identified.

Two Men Injured In Accidents In Elyria and Lorain
Police report multiple weekend accidents injuring two men. Fred Sukelac of 314 West River Street treated for cuts after his car hit a parked vehicle at 754 West River and a pole, then overturned. Sukelac charged with a traffic violation. Boyd W. Payne, 28, of Lorain, hospitalized with possible leg injuries after a motorcycle collision on Pearl Road near Lorain while passing a car that slowed to turn. Agnes Schwartz was the other driver. Route 10 saw three vehicles damaged near the county line as a light fuse caused a rear collision with a truck. Clyde Smith, Joseph Mervas, and Edwin Beriswill involved. Beriswill accused Carl Mendoza of colliding on Route 47. Mendoza claimed the other car did not stop. Oscar Powell and Fred Marks had cars damaged on West Bridge Street. Marks cited for driving under the influence. Theodore Simon’s car damaged on West Avenue. Continued on Page 2.

Grand Jury May Finish Its Session Today
The Lorain County grand jury, toward completing its first 1949 session, was expected to finish this afternoon after six telephone and telegraph executives testified. Prosecutor Paul J. Mikus said their statements could determine if further testimony or another session is needed. Two new jurors, Elizabeth A. Stexman and another, were drawn as the panel resumed after a recess. The inquiry may involve gambling and communications records. The Elyria American Legion Post 12 meets tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the post home on Ohio Street. GAMBIER The Kenyon College campus has endured several fires with fatalities in its history. A 1905 blaze destroyed the Kenyon military academy building killing three students, while 1898's Rosse Hall fire caused no deaths. The 1907 library fire also caused extensive damage with no casualties. Thomas Flood, 29, escaped serious injury after his car hit a pole on Route 57 near Lorain.
