Senate Chief Sees Budget Cuts Rising Above Reagan Plan

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Pete Domenici backs Reagan’s 41.4 billion in cuts and wants at least 10 billion more. He says his panel will consider options beyond the president’s plan. Debt concerns and inflation drive the push for deeper reductions. House members critique the existing cuts as unfair and inhumane. Regan and Weidenbaum defend the approach, noting rosy Carter-era estimates. The administration pursues a third round of reviews to meet a 1984 balance goal.
