Soviet Premier urges resumption of trade with United States
Nikolai Tikhonov told the 26th Communist Party congress that Soviet grain shortages and the U S embargo are hurting the economy. He called for stable mutually beneficial ties with the capitalistic world and improved U S relations while outlining a decade long economic plan. He said trade declines are due to U S policy and noted efforts to boost grain and fodder production and livestock farming.

Minister shot through church window by youth in woods
North Olmsted Ohio police said a 14-year-old fired a .22 rifle from a wooded area near 25376 Butternut Ridge Road. Rev Neil Orchard, 31, pastor of North Olmsted Evangelical Friends Church, was wounded in the abdomen but in satisfactory condition after surgery. Authorities said the youth and others had been shooting at the church and nearby objects. the suspect admitted firing the shot.
