Lorain County selects Players of the Year in hoops
Lorain County Basketball Coaches Association names Lee Svete of Lorain and Bill Szabo of Firelands as Class AAA and AAA Players of the Year. Amherst's Buck Riley earns top coach honors in the large class, while Bob Guinta of Elyria Catholic is named coach of the smaller class. Szabo becomes the only underclassman on the first or second AAA teams, a sophomore with a standout season. The AAA first team also features Mike Under man, Ron McGhee, Jim Bacina, and Craig Wilson. the second team includes Calvin Jeter, Steve Lindquist, Jamie Gilbert, Joe Hilliard, and Ron Park.

Jack Nicklaus powered from behind with five straight birdies starting at the 14th to win the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Golf Classic by one stroke over Grier Jones. Nicklaus, 38, shot 65 and 13 under for the last 36 holes, earning $50,000 and extending his Inverrary mastery with three victories in seven appearances. His wife Barbara even staged a playful gag about withdrawing him from the final round.
