The State Utilities Commission denied Logan Gas Company's request for a rehearing on its rejected rate schedule filed last November. No sufficient cause was shown to support the rehearing, and the proposed increases aimed to take effect December 15.
Three men and a woman were killed when an eastbound New York Central Twentieth Century Limited struck a car near Rochester. Victims were Glen L. Smith 41 and Agusta 33 of Rochester Ray Betteridge 2 of Rochester and Dewey Ernest 26 of Spencerport. Engineer James Kane of Buffalo piloted the train.
In Palmyra Indiana a public trial begins over W Clyde Martin a former high school principal who funded a community hall with his own money after clashing with church elders over Sunday sports and band practice. He defends his plan as wholesome recreation while church leaders accuse him of desecrating the Sabbath. Three judges will be selected from church members with Martin naming one.
In Wooster Ohio on February 27 J Barnes 23 a factory worker was harassed by several factory girls who tore his shirt and struck him with iodine as revenge after tipping off Mr and Mrs Franks newlyweds. The incident began after a dispute over work.
Lorain police and Cleveland detectives search Lorain for the Lyons brothers in a murder case near Norwalk. A. W. Morgan identifies James Lyons on Pearl Street and near the City Bank. sightings also reported at a South Lorain cigar store on 28th Street.
Brooklyn police arrest Richard Sells and Frank Rammelo aboard the steamship City of Eureka on suspicion of robbing a $16,000 Western Maryland Dairy payroll last Wednesday. Paymaster M. J. Berlin and Patrolman Patrick Durkin were shot. The men, both denying involvement, are held without bail as fugitives from justice.
Columbus Feb 27 Governor Donahey indicated today he will not announce his findings before next week on the probe of charges that state city enforcement officials helped employ women to entice men into violating city laws and that officers were involved in other improper acts. A stenographic transcript of testimony from the star chamber hearing Wednesday at the state prohibition commissioner McDonald’s offices was turned over to the governor Friday evening.
Sanitary Policeman Frank Williams reported to the Board of Health with February figures: two measles cases and two chickenpox. 17 cases of whooping cough. A home was fumigated and 29 complaints were investigated. Williams urged prompt reporting to the Health Department. A Luther Bible of 1524 was found in Germany with margins in the reformer's handwriting.
Miss Mary Kane of Ansherat was injured when Green Line car 208 bound for Elyria left the rails near the Half Way House stop 14 and struck a telephone pole. The car suffered minor damage. passengers were moved to another car and service resumed after about thirty minutes. Officials cited no determined cause.
Connel lsville Pennsylvania February 27 Funeral plans were made today at the home of Irvin Snyder on Black Creek Road for the four Snyder children aged three to four. The house burned in high winds trapping the youngsters as the parents believe an oil lamp was knocked over while the mother was away. Snyder rushed from a barn nearby to save them but the flames had already overtaken the home.
Frances Drake Nesbitt a 26 year old Ohio State University co ed was murdered February 19 in her Troy Ohio home. Coroner G J Hance ruled the killer or killers unknown and the weapon undetermined after the inquest.
London reports official estimates show Britain plans to cut naval spending by 12 million dollars for 1926 compared with 1925. The navy's total cost for the year is set at 20 million dollars. Lyons brothers reward raised to 2100 dollars for the shooting of a detective of The American Express Company. James Lyons implicated.
Mrs. Marguerite L. Dickey 29, fearing her Detroit photographer husband will seek a divorce, attempted to drown herself and her two sons Hilly 5 and Charles 3 in the tidal basin. Authorities say the youngest child was pulled from the water and both mother and son rescued by government workers. all were said to be recovering at the emergency hospital.
Joe Oman, 65, of South Amherst, lost more than 3800 when two men posed as trusted helpers and handed him a satchel supposedly containing 300000 in bills. A taxi ride to Elyria led to the ruse as Oman watched the satchel turn up empty, the men speaking in Slavish and claiming a California connection before the swindle unfolded. The incident is labeled a Slavish confidence game with details continuing on Page 2.
In Columbus on February 27 McDonald announced the dismissal next Monday of H C Gibson dry agent. Gibson had charged assistant state prohibition commissioner Propst with improper conduct and claimed Propst, Ruth Farrell Columbus and other agents rehearsed testimony before the governor’s probe into Farrell’s alleged role in luring Marshal Nutt Westerville across dry laws. Gibson demanded a public hearing and disputed the expenses cited as improper.
Columbus reports 586 measles cases this month with 46 new cases yesterday and four deaths this year. Health Commissioner J A Beer urges strict precautions to prevent complications and fatalities.

A showdown on the railroad consolidation bill will be demanded in the Senate before April 1. Senator Albert B Cummins of Iowa, author, says the measure allows voluntary mergers for three years, then ICC control for compulsory consolidations. A re capture clause would take excess above six percent net return and redistribute to those earning under five percent.
Federal officials forecast the most spectacular trial in U S history as a national rum ring case with 140 million dollars involved, 48 arrests already made, and more than 100 indictments expected. A blanket indictment naming all conspirators was discussed as the jury nears completion, possibly requiring a large hall for the massive proceeding.

Bishop William Montgomery Brown, found guilty of heresy by an Episcopal Church court, will ask the state supreme court for an injunction to bar the church from removing him. Madrid dispatch reports seven teenagers from Tetuan, Morocco were killed when a Riff shell exploded on Alfonso Xist street. The incident occurred Wednesday, with local advices confirming the deaths.
Joseph Leitner seeks a judgment of 576 against Morris and Ben Atkin of Lorain in a suit filed here. He alleges a good faith rental agreement for a Lorain store at 70 a month and claims he was barred from occupying the building. He says he bought 500 furniture to open a retail shop and had to store it elsewhere. Police report a live wire fell onto Parksyraae and Oxford at Teane.
No relatives claim the body of Felix Carvello, a New York Central railroad camp worker killed Thursday afternoon by James Harris. Harris, charged with first degree injuring Carvello, says he killed him after Carvello drew a knife. Harris is bound over to the grand jury. witnesses say jealousy over Mrs. Lee Davis and Miss Pauline Allen sparked the fatal confrontation. Mrs. Davis’s husband is fined for bootlegging and both Davis and Allen are held as material witnesses.
New York, Feb. 27. Broadway producer Karl Carroll testified before a federal grand jury about the bathtub party at his theatre. He reportedly named his main guests and faces subpoenas for several attendees. Joyce Hawley’s attorney says she will sue Carroll for 160000 for breach of contract and defamation over her alleged role in the publicity stunt.
Betty Talbert a 67 year old Black woman was found on the kitchen floor by a delivery man with stove burners on and the room filled with fumes. She died two hours later at the Queenehal hospital.
A man identified as Steve Korc was fined 83 for petty larceny and sentenced to jail by Mayor Humkson in police court. The case involved 96 coats and a charge of petty larceny.
