Oberlin Protests Segregation Fuel Civic Dialogue at Symposia
Oberlin College hosts a symposium on Civil Rights and States Rights as students prepare a Mock Convention. Speakers from the University of South Carolina and Notre Dame urge dialogue, education, and gradual reform to advance voting rights and school integration while criticizing political tools and urging party support.
Southern Delegates May Bolt at Democratic Convention
At Oberlin College Finney Chapel Robert M C Figg of the University of South Carolina warned that Southern delegates might walk out of the San Francisco Democratic Convention over civil rights. He suggested some nominees would be unacceptable to the South and could be sidetracked by the party chairman. Notre Dame’s Harry Wofford backed a strong civil rights plank even if it risks a walkout.
