Unwanted Imports Hit Shade Trees Across the United States
The article notes chestnut blight from an Oriental import first found in New York in 1904 that wiped out American chestnut trees, Dutch elm disease from Holland found in Cleveland in 1930 decimating native elms, and white pine blister rust identified in Geneva in 1908 halting white pine reforestation. A. F. Rumple of the Davey Tree Expert Co. cites control as helpful but warns any affected greenery faces risk. Massachusetts is highlighted as an invasion point for several European insect foes including the gypsy moth and beech bark disease.
