Dr D Barrett, health commissioner, explains that diseased tonsils and adenoids harm health, cause frequent throat infections, obesity and weakness, and may lead to heart and kidney diseases. He notes variation in prevalence by locality, with about 15 percent of American schoolchildren affected, and urges removal when infected or obstructive. The piece ends referencing Martin Dam in Alabama.
