Detroit topped Cleveland 89 to 73 at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The Cavaliers suffer their second straight defeat after a five game win streak amid a busy NBA season.
Elyria High School saw a seven year high in absences as flu cases rose this week with 75 to 90 patients treated by nurse Linda Mahar. District officials reported 317 absent students and daily sick rates peaking around 347 on Monday, far above the 180 to 200 norm.
Lauryn Hill won five Grammys including album of the year for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, making her the first rap artist to claim the major album prize. Celine Dion also claimed multiple awards for My Heart Will Go On, while Madonna Shania Twain Stevie Wonder and others scored wins.
U S Rep Sherrod Brown of Lorain says he will choose within a month whether to seek the Democratic nomination to run against Senator Mike DeWine. He met with Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle and Senator Robert Torricelli who encouraged him and pledged support if he wins the seat. Brown cited issues like prescription drug reform Medicare Lake Erie water quality and education as key concerns and said he would not run if he could not work on those matters in the Senate.
Elyria 69 year old Cleveland Scott pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to aggravated murder in the death of his wife Anne Scott 70. Judge Edward Zaleski ordered a mental health evaluation with pretrial hearing set after the report. Scott held on a 1 million cash bond at the county jail after beating Anne Scott with a claw hammer January 21 at their Michigan Avenue home. Anne died seven hours later in a Cleveland hospital. autopsy found eight to ten blows to the head.
The CIA told Congress that Russian missiles, Chinese power systems, and Mideast shipping could fail due to the Year 2000 computer problem. Air Force Gen. John Gordon warned analysts that many nations were not treating the threat with sufficient seriousness.
CIA deputy director told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing that Russia looks highly vulnerable to Y2K problems, alarming concerns about safety of missiles, nuclear plants, and gas pipelines. He noted no obvious Russian or Chinese missile issues to date.
