Vermilion River flooding debated icebreakers and blame

Mayor Hobart Johnson cited a Coast Guard icebreaker could have reduced flooding along Vermilion River but declined to fault the service. He noted ice jammed at the Liberty Avenue Bridge and near McGarvey's Restaurant, with other factors possibly involved. Coast Guard officials said the Neth Bay is too large to maneuver past the river mouth. Residents blamed the Army Corps of Engineers for not cutting a hole in the breakwall. Flooding linked to ice jams at the bend and river mouth rather than a single cause.

Mistrial ruling awaited in Lorain vehicular homicide case

Judge Robert Corts faced a delay as the Lorain County Common Pleas Court prepared to rule on a mistrial motion in the aggravated vehicular homicide trial of Monroeville truck driver Howard Stimson. Jurors had begun deliberations Friday, one juror was excused, and a juror allegedly whispered that the jury may be deliberating. Camillo, the court reporter, reported hearing a voice near the jury room as the jury deliberated, prompting questions about communications during the trial.
