The reunion with his wife and family at Wright Patterson AFB followed a stressful, months long separation during which his nerves weakened and fear of death haunted the family. Despite the hero status, he wore civilian clothes and the base dinner went largely unnoticed. The colonel says prayer and thoughts of family kept him going after being shot down last September.
