A columnist recalls Illinois farming wealth in the 1960s and 70s when land prices rose to 3000 4000 an acre eight hundred forty acre farms and family expansion. It contrasts with today as farmers hold on to land and face debt and uncertain futures while dreaming of generations farming again.

A Department of Agriculture forecast places U.S. farm export value at a decade-low of 26 billion dollars for the current fiscal year, with shipments possibly totaling about 114 million metric tons. Despite the drop, volume would be up from 1985-86, while imports edge down 4 percent to 20 billion, slightly improving the trade balance.
