Cigarette break ends long ordeal in Indiana and Ohio

An escaped convict and bank robber, Bryan B. Ball, 40, of Springfield, surrendered after he put a revolver on a car seat to light a cigarette, a hostage, Robert Herrman, 38, from Eldorado, grabbed the gun. Ball had held Herrman and his two children for about 30 hours after a Tuesday bank robbery in Richmond, Indiana. Herrman and the children were unharmed, Ball requested more cars and a head start, then relaxed to smoke. FBI agents pursued as Ball surrendered following the cigarette incident.

Hearings clear Torrijos on Panamanian drug smuggling

Senate leaders from both parties announced after a completed secret review that no evidence emerged to undermine support for the canal treaties. Opponents argued circumstantial links between Gen. Omar Torrijos and narcotics trade corruption remain, and the two day closed session appeared not to shift votes on the treaties.

Weather and politics blur amid cold and snow

Light snow and occasional snow tonight with lows near 10 to 11 degrees. Friday will be cloudy with a 40 percent chance of snow flurries and highs around 25 to 30. Hypnotized Papp Maintains Innocence in Long Session

Timothy Papp, under nine hours of age regression hypnosis by Dr George Knox and Mrs Sue David, again said he did not rape and kill Roxie Ann Keathley in 1973. The session ended only when he collapsed from exhaustion and will resume Sunday.

Officials trim blowers to save heat at schools

Harrassed executive charged in Berea boy slaying

William T. Peterseim a 37 year old real estate executive faces aggravated murder charges after a 15 year old Berea youth Robert Squire was shot in front of the Peterseim home early Wednesday. A second 16 year old Berea youth Garry Pease was also shot with no serious injury. Peterseim is charged with three counts of attempted murder as police say two other 15 year olds were fired upon. Police note the family had faced vandalism and obscene calls prior to the incident. Page 4 column 1.

Great Ohio Smoke Out Promises One Day No Smoking

The Lorain County Chapter of the American Cancer Society backs the Great Ohio Smoke-Out a statewide one day ban on smoking set for March 1. Cards urging self care and a day off smoking are being distributed at churches schools and businesses with a pledge to participate. The chapter will run an Anti Smoking Clinic later and the effort aligns with a federal push led by Health Secretary Joseph Califano to curb smoking nationwide.
