Eureka Calif February 23 A high north gale drives the schooner Muneleon toward jagged reefs south of Trumboldt Bar with thirty men aboard. Coast guard cutter Cahokia, hindered by towering swells near Humboldt Bar, cannot reach the vessel, fueling fear for the crew.
Dame Nellie Melba, famed soprano who helped Puccini and Gounod create roles, dies in Melbourne after weeks of illness while returning from Cairo. Born Helen Porter Mitchell in Melbourne on May 19, 1865, she worked with Verdi and performed with Caruso and others. Her death ends a bridge between contemporary and earlier opera generations.
Washington notes that all embargo bills before the House Ways and Means committee were voted down in this session. The measures included the Capper-Garber Ol Restriction bill the Burmesa one year embargo on wheat and agricultural products and the Williamson proposal for a total embargo on Russian imports.

His hobbies include athletics and Kiwanis, with a perfect Kiwanis attendance record, and he is married with one son. Production of aircraft in 1930 is estimated at 2,514 civil and 710 military.
A Lorain County grand jury session opens tomorrow with 15 jurors to hear a heavy docket. Five persons bound over include four charged with first degree murder and one with second degree murder, plus others facing burglary, larceny, robbery, and auto stealing. Names tied to murder, manslaughter, grand larceny and burglary span Elyria Lorain Oberlin and surrounding areas.
Two long distance calls traced from a first floor apartment under William E. Potter’s former suite are examined by police for new evidence against Pittsburgh Hymie Martin, the alleged trigger man. J J Radlich and Mrs Betty Gray, witnesses in the murder inquiry, may hold back information. Martin faces arraignment on a murder warrant as prosecutors seek a four day continuance.

G A M Hannaford of the Elyria Hardware Company was elected president of the Elyria Chamber of Commerce for the coming year at the annual board meeting. Alex Altfeld was named first vice president J C Parsch second vice president and W O Zaiser treasurer. Earl Bacon remains secretary until September.
Transportation debate dominates council meeting as the transportation committee led by Councilman Paul Wainwright recommends the city enter a franchise with a bus company for in city service. The plan includes separating the bus and taxi ordinances to handle them separately and may remove the $100 per vehicle license fee obstacle for an experimental service.
Kiwanis clubs schedule a shoe drive with captains named for each shift and a route through Pasadena streets. Shoes and items donated will be given to regular agencies, with front porch drop offs labeled For Kiwanis Club to speed collection.
