Swede freighter Magne sinks after collision off Walcheren
Seven crewmen are presumed dead after the 1413 ton Swedish freighter Magne sank following a collision with the Swedish freighter Kirribilli off Walcheren in Zeeland. PFC James C. Whitmore received the Bronze Star Medal with V Device after his death. Army 14 presented the award to his parents Mr and Mrs Hollis T Whitmore at 297 Hawthorne St. Cleveland-based Army 14 witness Walter L Mochal and Richard Whitmore of Ravenna looked on. Whitmore earned the honor for heroism on November 9 in Vietnam when his unit reinforced U S troops and he stayed exposed gathering ammunition before he was killed by rocket fire.
