Washington notes currency expansion backed in House as coinage committee reports a modified Somers silver bill and sets immediate legislative right of way before adjournment. The report mentions a fatal truck incident but details are fragmented and unclear.
Washington February 22 A favorable report to the Senate on the St. Lawrence waterways treaty was assured today as an almost complete poll of the foreign relations committee showed a majority of 12 to 5 in favor with only four members remaining to be polled.
Cleveland detectives arrested two Elyria youths after a late afternoon rush hour robbery at the Tom McAn shoe store on East Sixth Street near Huclid Avenue. Delos Grant Almworth and Russell Smith were identified. Almworth fled but was tackled and detained, Smith was later arrested at his Cleveland home basement with a gun found there.
Partly cloudy with possible showers in the eastern and far southern sections tonight or Thursday. Warmer readings expected in the eastern portion tonight.
New cabinet picks set the Roosevelt administration to push a world economic conference and debt talks. Senator Cordell Hull will be secretary of state and William H Woodin will head the treasury, with Frances Perkins likely to be labor secretary. Swanson Walsh and Farley named to other top posts, Roosevelt plans early talks with European envoys.
New York February 22 strong list of probable cabinet appointees includes Cordell Hull as Secretary of State William Woodin as Secretary of the Treasury and Thomas J Walsh as Attorney General. Other likely posts include Claude Swanson Secretary of the Navy James Farley Postmaster General Frances Perkins Labor Henry Wallace Agriculture Philip La Follette Commerce and Samuel Brattan or Bronson Cutting for Interior with Swagar Sherley a leading War candidate.
National Guardsmen will assemble at 9 30 A M tomorrow to attend the funeral services for Carl Muller a former Elyria Council member and merchant.
Senator Cordell Hull of Tennessee, future Secretary of State, is praised as the leading expert on taxation and tariffs. Woodin, head of American Car and Foundry and a noted composer, is named Secretary of the Treasury and a Roosevelt brain trust member.
Elvira Republican Women's Club voted to oppose the Harter Congressional Redistricting Bill after hearing Frank Stetson explain it at a meeting hosted by Mrs Florence Martin on Second Street. Mrs Jennie Bins presented a paper on Ohio presidents noting seven born in the state and detailing their home sites training and achievements.
Denver police hurry Marion Rogers and Charles Baker to station for questioning by Chief A. T. Clark Safety Manager Carl Milliken and a U S justice agent in connection with the Charles Boettcher II kidnapping inquiry.

Miami report says Anton J. Cermak rests more easily after a troubled night. His temperature falls from 102 to 100.6 as doctors monitor his heart and lungs following the Roosevelt assassination attempt. Dr. Frederick Tice of Chicago says danger to vital organs has passed for now.
A 750 strong conference of prohibition leaders is set for March 7 and 8 to plan a nationwide campaign against repealing the 18th Amendment. The effort is organized by the Board of Temperance, Prohibition and Public Morals of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South with similar rallies planned nationwide by pro repeal groups.
Capt Sir Malcolm Campbell driving the Bluebird on a south run at Daytona Beach achieved 273.556 miles an hour breaking his own land speed record. Under adverse conditions the test proved fastest on land as he plans a return run to attempt a new overall mark.
A crudely made bomb wrapped in brown paper addressed to Franklin D. Roosevelt was found at the Washington post office. The package bore a Watertown N Y postmark and was opened with caution by postal workers. Experts think it was the work of an amateur or crank and not likely to explode.
An army of hastily recruited special officers fired tear gas at a crowd of milk strikers dumping milk near Mayville. Police arrested 83 protesters and jailed them in Dodge County. Within hours over 200 angry farmers gathered in the rail yard shouting threats.
Peiping Feb 22 United Press says an ultimatum will be delivered to the Nanking government tomorrow ordering Chinese troops to withdraw from Jehol within 24 hours. The warning comes from the Manchukuo government and threatens a Manchukuoan and Japanese drive into Jehol if ignored. A parallel message will warn Marshal Chang Hsueh-Liang. Nanking not yet advised and China vows a united front.
Desperate fighting rages along Jehol border with infantry cavalry artillery and air power. Japanese navy orders fleetwide readiness for any emergency as Chang Ching Hui mobilizes Manchukuoan troops for the Jehol drive and China withdraws troops to limit spread of operations.
In Plymouth Ohio on February 22 a family tale surfaces about Betsy Ross and a travel stained stranger who claimed to be George Washington ahead of his staff. Historian Mary Tubbs recounts Betsy Ross sheltering and feeding the guest before Washington’s arrival in Philadelphia in 1777.
Amherst officials warn against a special referendum on the proposed municipal light plant as illegal. The notice appears in a continuing report on page 2.
Mrs. Harriett Cole 86 lifelong resident of this section was killed near Huntington while crossing the road after alighting from a bus. A truck driven by A J Hall blinded by bus headlights struck her as bus driver W L Newcomber aided her. Sheriff Clarence W. Dick ordered both men to report for statements. no one is held. Mrs. Cole widow of Civil War veteran Dudley Cole resided at Baker's Crossing and stayed with daughter-in-law Mrs Myrtle Cole in Wellington. She survived by three sons Arthur Hir am and Robert and a daughter Mrs Nellie Chaffee. Funeral arrangements pending.
Eight trustees for Elyria Memorial Hospital Company will be elected at tonight’s annual meeting in the hospital dining room at 6 15 p m. Six terms expire this year while two vacancies result from a death and a resignation.
Fred Fitts of Pittsfield reported to the sheriff that 130 chickens were stolen from his chicken coops last night.
