City council considers immediate expense cuts to avert a projected year end deficit of about 50 thousand dollars. A proposed 4.0 percent salary reduction on a 160000 dollar payroll is discussed along with possible other savings and voluntary salary agreements from all employees.
Two fires broke out around 2 am in Amherst. The larger blaze at Park Avenue and Taylor Street damaged furnishings and totals about 1500 dollars with cause undetermined. A second, smaller fire hit the Mischka slaughter house north of town, confined to cattle poles and quickly controlled.
The Elyria Memorial Hospital Company will review the past year at its annual meeting in the hospital dining room. Department reports will be presented and future plans discussed.
Ohio forecast calls for fair but cooler conditions in the extreme east tonight. Wednesday will be cloudier and warmer with rain possible in the south and rain or snow in the north in the afternoon and at night.

Carl F Muller 62 of 1117 East avenue died at 6 15 this morning after eight weeks ill. former Elyria councilman and Elyria Park Board member. A Denmark native, he served in Cuba during the Spanish American War with Troop A Third Cavalry. He owned a local grocery, was active in IOOF and Spanish American War Veterans, and belonged to Elyria Church of Christ. Survived by widow Mae, daughter Catherine O Dell, Albuquerque, NM, step daughter Mary Jane Buell, home, two brothers, four sisters. Military funeral by Spanish American War Veterans. About one hundred farmers from southern Lorain county gathered at Huntington town hall for the second pen ny army meeting in the area. They aimed to halt mortgage foreclosures and debated taxes, electric power rates, and telephone charges before outlining a plan of action.

Two gasoline tanks exploded at the Zung Dah Rubber Vulcanizing plant in Shanghai spraying workers with burning fuel and igniting the factory. Police feared 150 deaths as bodies were recovered while fire crews fought the blaze.
Two Moros driven by jungle madness slashed seven natives to death and wounded three on Bongaw Island in the Tawitaji group before they were shot by Philippine constabulary. The attack occurred in a native village as the pair moved hut to hut with knives.
Robbers shattered a heavy vault door at Peoples' Bank in Woodstock Champaign County on February 21 and rifled 40 or more safety deposit boxes taking valuable papers. A smaller cash vault inside the larger one remained unopened. It was the bank's third robbery in five years and officials believe no cash was taken.

In a stormy session the Elyria council passed a three year gas rate ordinance by six to three after loud protests from opponents and a 2336-signature petition. The measure cuts rates for 5 000 feet of gas to 3 20 for two years and 3 55 in year three, with immediate reductions and a potential referendum. Opponents urged a gas survey and argued the plan benefits the gas company. The ordinance, brought by Walter Kohn, faces possible Public Utilities Commission review and bond-related concerns.
