State controls may double Oberlin sewer rates
Oberlin city engineer Chris Nielson says tougher Ohio EPA rules on sewer effluent could nearly double local sewer bills from about 156 to over 300 annually. New mandates target rainfall runoff treatment, ammonia reduction by about 65 percent, heavier metal testing, and higher river water oxygen levels, with public comment planned next week.

Youth Struck by Car In Serious Condition Near Vermilion
A 16 year old Birmingham youth was hospitalized in serious condition after being struck by a car on State Route 113 just west of Vermilion Road in Henrietta Township Erie. The injured youth sustained multiple injuries and was treated at Lorain Community Hospital. The Elyria post of the Ohio Highway Patrol investigated the accident, but details were not released at presstime.

Hot wood burner blamed in blaze at Herring residence
Fire officials say an overheated wood burner caused 15 000 to 18 000 dollars in damages at the Mark Herring home 6171 Antrim Road Elyria Township Tuesday night. The blaze destroyed the carport and a 1972 car and damaged a rear washroom. Moderate smoke damaged the two bedroom frame dwelling.

Lorain County Jail Earns Two-Year Health Accreditation
Lorain County Correctional Facility received a two year health care re accreditation from Sheriff Martin J Mahony after meeting 156 AMA Standards for jail health services. Two non essential standards dental care and exercise were not fully met with gaps in dental exams and hygiene and seven hours weekly supervised exercise not provided. Captain Charles L MacDonald credited for the re accreditation. The jail has held accreditation since 1981.
