Japanese storm toll tops 400 as ships sink and flood hits Matsuyama

The Japanese storm over the weekend left more than 400 missing and 11 confirmed dead, with 21 ships sunk and 43 missing. The Maritime Safety Board reported 11 vessels aground or damaged, while weather conditions and China Civil War conflict hindered information. The Midori Maru carrying 347 passengers was escorted to Manila by the Orion Star, and the Nansha Maru was spotted heading toward southern Japan. The storm swept Kyushu area and caused a tidal wave that flooded Matsuyama, damaging 75 homes.

Sub Blast Kills 2 Three Missing in Navy Sub Fire

Two sailors were killed and three others missing after a battery explosion and fire aboard the U S S Pomodon at Hunters Point naval shipyard in San Francisco. Five sailors were injured and rescuers were forced to retreat due to poisonous gas as hydrogen fumes delayed entry to the submarine. The 306 foot Guppy class craft had about 30 men aboard when the blast occurred.

Two robbers take $2000 from Elyria store owner

Elyria police hunt for two men after a Saturday night robbery at Smittie's Package Store 610 Lodi St. Owner Arnold Smith says $2000 was taken from a safe in the garage after the thieves knocked him down and forced him into a panel truck. They also took a pistol and a $19 billfold amid the dash. The men fled in the truck as the garage light was out.

Elyria considers annexation study by joint committee

Elyria City Council and Elyria Township Board of Trustees meet tonight to act on a resolution for a joint citizens committee to study annexation questions. The proposal follows a unanimous motion at Thursday’s Citizens Council Annexation Committee meeting, with two township trustees present. The plan aims to define terms areas and conditions for a potential annexation that could include Lorain south of the city and parts of Elyria and nearby townships. Mayor J Grant Keys proposed the measure which was approved by the committee.
