The punishment bars most sacred rites and blessings, restricting marriages, communion, baptism, confirmation, penance, and even a priestly blessing. Police with tear gas and Knights of Columbus guarded attempts to install Father Vincent Caruso after crowd resistance and a three hour standoff. Parishioners may transfer to another parish if they can prove noninvolvement. Holy Redeemer serves an Italian community.
